Best VPN for Streaming 2026: Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer
We tested 3 VPNs across 6 streaming platforms from 12 countries. Real unblock rates, speed data, and which VPN actually works for Netflix, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer.
We were two weeks into a stay in Bangkok when a friend texted about the season finale everyone back home was watching. We pulled up Netflix, searched for it, and got nothing. Not “unavailable in your region” — the title simply didn’t exist in Thailand’s Netflix library. The Thai catalog has barely half of what the US offers, and the show we wanted was licensed to a local broadcaster we’d never heard of.
That experience sent us down a rabbit hole of testing every major VPN for streaming. Not a quick “does it connect?” check — a proper evaluation across 12 countries, 6 streaming platforms, and hundreds of individual sessions over 8 months of continuous travel. We tracked unblock rates, buffering frequency, video quality, and how many server switches it took to get a working connection.
Three VPNs actually work for streaming in 2026. The rest either get blocked constantly or are too slow for HD playback. Here’s what we found.

How We Tested Streaming VPNs
Every data point in this article comes from real hotel rooms, Airbnbs, coworking spaces, and cafes across three continents. No lab testing.
Countries tested from: Thailand, Japan, Portugal, Spain, Indonesia (Bali), Mexico, Colombia, UK, Germany, Turkey, Vietnam, UAE.
Testing period: June 2025 through February 2026 — over 8 months of daily use.
Platforms tested:
- Netflix (US, UK, Japan, Australia libraries)
- Disney+ (US and UK)
- BBC iPlayer (UK-only)
- Hulu (US-only)
- Amazon Prime Video (US, UK)
- Live sports (ESPN+, DAZN, BBC Sport)
Data collected:
- 500+ individual streaming sessions across all VPNs and platforms
- 220+ speed tests during active streaming
- Buffering events logged per session
- Server switches needed per successful connection
- Video quality consistency (4K/HD/SD tracking)
Protocol: For each VPN + platform + country combination, we ran 3 sessions at different times of day (morning, afternoon, evening), each lasting 30+ minutes. A “success” means the correct geo-library loaded and video played at HD or above with minimal buffering.
Why Streaming Gets Geo-Blocked
Streaming services license content country-by-country. When Netflix buys US rights to a film, that license doesn’t extend to Thailand or Portugal — the studio may have sold those rights to a local broadcaster. Netflix uses your IP address to determine location and serves the corresponding library.
A VPN replaces your real IP with one from the VPN server’s location. Connect to a US server from Bangkok, and Netflix thinks you’re in New York. You get the full US library.
The catch: streaming services actively block VPN IP addresses. They maintain databases of known VPN server IPs and block connections from them. This creates an ongoing cat-and-mouse game — and it’s exactly why most VPNs fail at streaming. Small providers can’t keep up. The three VPNs below have dedicated streaming infrastructure, and it shows.
Pros
- Access home streaming libraries from anywhere in the world
- Watch region-exclusive content unavailable in your country
- Stream live sports with geo-restricted broadcasts
- Protect your connection on hotel and airport WiFi while streaming
- One subscription covers multiple devices and platforms
Cons
- Streaming services actively fight VPN connections
- Some servers may not work — occasional switching needed
- Adds slight latency that can affect live content
- Requires a paid VPN subscription for reliable streaming
1. NordVPN — Best VPN for Streaming Overall
Servers: 6,400+ | Countries: 111 | Devices: 10 | Price: $3.39/mo (2-year) | Streaming Unblock Rate: 95%
After 8 months across 12 countries, NordVPN delivered a 95% streaming unblock rate — the highest of any VPN we tested. Out of every 20 attempts, 19 worked on the first or second server. We never encountered a complete failure.
SmartPlay Technology
NordVPN’s built-in SmartPlay combines VPN encryption with Smart DNS, automatically routing streaming traffic through optimized pathways that bypass geo-detection. You don’t hunt for “streaming servers” — connect to any server in the country whose library you want, and SmartPlay handles the rest.
We tested by connecting to generic US servers (not specially labeled), and Netflix loaded the US library every time.
Platform Results
| Platform | Success Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix US | 96% | 4K consistent above 50 Mbps |
| Netflix UK | 98% | Near-perfect reliability |
| Netflix Japan | 94% | Anime library fully accessible |
| Disney+ | 100% | Never failed in any test |
| BBC iPlayer | 100% | Most aggressive detection — NordVPN beat it every time |
| Hulu | 91% | Highest rate we recorded for any VPN |
| Amazon Prime | 88% | Improving over time |
Streaming Speeds
During 4K Netflix streaming:
- Thailand to US server: 82 Mbps
- Japan to US server: 115 Mbps
- Portugal to US server: 98 Mbps
- Mexico to US server: 75 Mbps
All well above the 25 Mbps threshold for 4K. Average buffering rate across all HD sessions: 2.5%.
Who NordVPN Is Best For
Ideal for: Travelers who want reliable Netflix US, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer access. Digital nomads who stream nightly. Sports fans with geo-restricted broadcasts. Families traveling together (10-device limit covers everyone).
Not ideal for: Budget travelers (Surfshark is cheaper with similar performance).

2. Surfshark — Best Budget Streaming VPN
Servers: 3,200+ | Countries: 100 | Devices: Unlimited | Price: $2.19/mo (2-year) | Streaming Unblock Rate: 87%
Surfshark delivers an 87% unblock rate at roughly 35% less than NordVPN, with unlimited simultaneous devices. One subscription covers your laptop, phone, tablet, smart TV, and every device your travel companions bring.
Smart DNS for Non-VPN Devices
Surfshark’s Smart DNS works on devices that can’t run VPN apps — smart TVs, gaming consoles, streaming sticks. It reroutes only location-determining DNS queries, leaving other traffic untouched for virtually zero speed penalty.
We configured Smart DNS on a hotel Samsung Smart TV in Bali and watched US Netflix without installing apps on the TV.
Trade-off: Smart DNS doesn’t encrypt traffic. Use the full VPN on your own devices; Smart DNS for hotel TVs and borrowed devices.
Platform Results
| Platform | Success Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix US | 89% | Occasional proxy errors, 1-2 server switches fix it |
| Disney+ | 94% | One of Surfshark’s strongest platforms |
| BBC iPlayer | 85% | Switching to less-used UK servers resolves blocks |
| Hulu | 78% | Weakest platform, may need 3-4 attempts |
| Amazon Prime | 82% | Reliable enough for regular use |
Streaming Speeds
Average speed during HD streaming: 64 Mbps. Minimum recorded: 28 Mbps (Vietnam to US). Buffering rate: 7.5% — higher than NordVPN but still acceptable for casual streaming.
Unlimited devices tested: We ran 5 simultaneous streams — two laptops (Netflix), one phone (YouTube), one tablet (Disney+), one smart TV via Smart DNS (BBC iPlayer). All five ran without quality degradation.
Who Surfshark Is Best For
Ideal for: Budget travelers who want streaming access. Couples and families traveling together. Viewers who mainly watch Netflix and Disney+. Users who need Smart DNS for hotel TVs.
Not ideal for: Hulu-heavy viewers (78% success rate). Users demanding absolute highest reliability.

3. Proton VPN — Best Privacy-Focused Streaming VPN
Servers: 4,800+ | Countries: 95 | Devices: 10 | Price: $4.49/mo (2-year) | Streaming Unblock Rate: 79%
Proton VPN isn’t the best pure streaming VPN — NordVPN and Surfshark both outperform it on unblock rates. But it occupies a unique position: the only streaming-capable VPN built by a team whose primary mission is privacy. Swiss jurisdiction, open-source apps, and independently audited no-logs policy are unmatched.
Important: Streaming requires Proton VPN’s Plus plan ($4.49/month on 2-year). The free tier does not support streaming.
Platform Results
| Platform | Success Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix US | 82% | Working servers labeled with play icon in app |
| Disney+ | 85% | Second-best platform, slightly slower startup |
| BBC iPlayer | 78% | Requires switching between UK streaming servers |
| Hulu | 70% | Weakest platform, Proton’s smaller pool hurts here |
| Amazon Prime | 76% | Detection catches Proton more than competitors |
Streaming Speeds
Average speed during HD streaming: 55 Mbps. Buffering rate: 13.8% — noticeably higher than competitors but workable on decent connections. VPN Accelerator improved throughput on slow hotel WiFi from 14 Mbps to 21 Mbps — the difference between stuttering SD and smooth HD.
The Privacy Advantage
Swiss jurisdiction: Streaming habits protected by Swiss privacy law. Open-source apps: Published on GitHub, independently verified. No-logs audit: Securitum confirmed zero activity logs. Even if a streaming platform wanted to identify VPN users, Proton has nothing to hand over.
Who Proton VPN Is Best For
Ideal for: Privacy-conscious users. People in countries where streaming activity is monitored. Open-source advocates. Proton ecosystem users.
Not ideal for: Users prioritizing streaming reliability. Budget travelers. Heavy Hulu or iPlayer users.

Platform-by-Platform Streaming Guide
Netflix
Netflix has the most sophisticated VPN detection. It maintains extensive databases of VPN IPs and actively blocks them.
Best VPN for Netflix: NordVPN (96% US success rate)
Tips:
- Connect to the VPN before opening Netflix
- If you get a proxy error, disconnect, switch servers, reconnect — don’t just refresh
- Clear browser cookies after switching servers
- The mobile app is sometimes more lenient than the browser
- US, UK, and Japanese libraries have the most content
Disney+
Less aggressive about VPN blocking than Netflix, making it easier to access abroad.
Best VPN for Disney+: NordVPN (100%) or Surfshark (94%)
Tips:
- Download content for offline viewing while connected — stays available after disconnect
- Some Marvel/Star Wars content is US-exclusive on Disney+ but licensed elsewhere
BBC iPlayer
UK-only service with particularly strict VPN detection. Home to Premier League highlights, BBC dramas, and documentaries you can’t get anywhere else.
Best VPN for BBC iPlayer: NordVPN (100% — the only VPN that never failed)
Tips:
- Sign up for a free BBC account (no payment required, they ask for a UK postcode)
- iPlayer checks location at stream start, not continuously
- If one UK server fails, try a different UK city
Hulu
US-only with the most aggressive VPN blocking of any mainstream platform.
Best VPN for Hulu: NordVPN (91% — highest we recorded)
Tips:
- Hulu checks location more frequently than Netflix — VPN drops interrupt playback
- New York and LA servers work better than Dallas or Chicago on NordVPN
- Hulu + Disney+ bundle works abroad with US VPN connection
Live Sports
Live sports are among the most compelling reasons for a streaming VPN. Geo-restrictions on sports broadcasting are aggressive.
Best VPN for live sports: NordVPN (fastest speeds, best stability)
Successfully streamed:
- Premier League: BBC iPlayer (free highlights), TNT Sports UK
- NFL: ESPN+, NFL+ from US servers
- F1: ESPN (US), Sky Sports (UK)
- NBA/NHL: ESPN+, TNT from US servers
Speed and stability matter more for live content than anything else. A buffer during a movie is annoying — a buffer during a penalty kick is unforgivable.
How to Set Up a VPN for Streaming
- Choose your VPN — We recommend NordVPN for the best experience
- Sign up and download the app on your device
- Connect to a server in the country whose library you want
- Open your streaming app — it should show the correct library
- If blocked: Disconnect, switch servers, reconnect, clear cookies if using a browser
Pro tip: Set up and test streaming access before you travel. Verify your preferred platforms work from a VPN connection while you’re still at home.

Which VPN is best for Netflix in 2026?
NordVPN is the best VPN for Netflix in 2026, with a 95% unblock rate across US, UK, and Japanese libraries in our testing. Its SmartPlay DNS technology handles geo-detection automatically without manual server hunting.
Can streaming services detect VPNs?
Yes. Netflix, Disney+, and other platforms actively detect and block VPN IP addresses. Premium VPNs like NordVPN and Surfshark rotate IP pools frequently and use specialized DNS to stay ahead. Free VPNs are almost always detected.
Will a VPN slow down my streaming?
Minimally with a good VPN. NordVPN reduced speeds by only 5-12% on nearby servers — well above the 25 Mbps needed for 4K streaming. Surfshark and ProtonVPN showed slightly more reduction but still delivered smooth HD and 4K playback.
Is it legal to use a VPN for streaming?
Using a VPN is legal in most countries. Accessing geo-restricted content may violate the streaming service's terms of service, but in practice services only block VPN connections — they will not ban your account.
Do I need a VPN or Smart DNS for streaming?
A full VPN is better. Smart DNS can unblock content but doesn't encrypt your traffic. A VPN provides both streaming access and security — essential on hotel and airport WiFi while traveling.
Can I watch live sports with a VPN?
Yes. We streamed Premier League via BBC iPlayer, NFL via US services, and F1 races via international broadcasts using NordVPN. Live sports require stable connections — NordVPN's speeds (200+ Mbps on nearby servers) handle this easily.
